diamond care
  Back
A diamond’s beauty comes from its sparkle, and after some wear, you may notice that your diamond seems to be losing some of that beauty. This is caused by build up on the stone itself as well as dirt getting trapped under the diamond and the setting.

You can keep your diamond looking brand new with regular home cleanings. Here are some tips to help keep your diamond looking beautiful everyday!

  • Always check your stones to be sure they are tight before cleaning.  If your stone is even slightly loose, scrubbing can loosen it more and you could be in danger of losing the stone
  • Use a small bowl in a safe place away from drains and other areas where you may lose your jewelry
  • NEVER clean jewelry with toothpaste, many are too abrasive and can cause damage
  • It is recommended that you take your jewelry to a trusted jeweler once or twice a year for a “check-up” and professional cleaning

Popular Home Cleaning Methods

  • Hot soapy water: using a mild non-chlorine soap and warm water, soak for 30 minutes or more, cloth depending on how much build up is on the item.  Then with an eyebrow brush, or a child’s soft toothbrush, gently scrub the piece loosening any debris. Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a lint free selvyt cloth
  • Ammonia and water: using a diluted solution of ammonia and water (a ratio of 1:5), soak your jewelry for approximately 30 minutes.  Gently scrub, rinse and dry the piece as described above
  • Purchase an over the counter cleaner: Many department stores carry a pre-mixed solution that includes a tray and a soft brush. Follow the instructions on the bottle for a quick cleaning
  • Ultrasonic cleaner: these are often used by jewelers and can be purchased at a reasonable price. This small machine creates a high-frequency vibration which shakes debris loose. Gently scrub, rinse and dry as described above

Storage & General Safety Tips

  • Make jewelry your finishing touch! Apply all lotions, perfume and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. This will keep your jewelry looking spectacular between cleanings
  • Chlorine is gold’s worst nightmare, so avoid wearing your fine jewelry when cleaning with any products that contain chlorine or other harsh abrasives. Also keep in mind, swimming pools and Jacuzzis typically have high amounts of chlorine so it is best to remove your jewelry prior to enjoying these activities
  • One of the only things that can harm a diamond is another diamond. So you should  carefully store your jewelry either by separating each piece with a soft lint free chamois cloth or carefully separated in a jewelry box
  • Diamonds are a magnet for grease, try to avoid touching the diamond directly. When removing your ring, hold it by the sides of the band, not the stone
  • Avoid wearing your jewelry during activities that may unnecessarily damage or dirty it such as exercising or gardening
